Police chief to stand trial

A South African court yesterday ordered the country's police chief, Jackie Selebi, to stand trial next year on corruption, fraud and other charges, rejecting his bid to have the case dismissed.

An ally of President Thabo Mbeki, Selebi is accused of receiving payments from Glenn Agliotti, a convicted drug smuggler accused of playing a role in the 2005 murder of a mining tycoon.
