Survey on pandas' protection begins
Chinese scientists have started another round of surveys on the giant panda population in the Sichuan-Gansu border areas.
Youngsters enjoy a nice splash in the water fountains of Taoranting, Beijing's major swimming pool, to cool themselves off during the recent hot spell. |
The survey is expected to produce a report on the pandas' natural food centers and population. It will also provide data for working out further measures to protect the species.
The one-year survey by 20 scientists will cover an area of 5,000 sq km in northern Sichuan and southern Gansu province, the principal range of the giant pandas.
Economist's awards to promote original ideas
Sun Yefang awards will be given to authors of works with "original ideas" on political economics.
The purpose of the awards is to encourage studies that will contribute to China's socialist modernization or to Marxist theory on economics.
Standards and methods for selecting outstanding economic works were approved at the inaugural meeting. The awards will be given every two years from 1984 onward.
Collective workers
Workers employed by the collective enterprises in Liaoning province totaled 3.5 million by the end of 1982. The output value of the collective enterprises reached 7 billion yuan in 1982.
Liaoning's success ranks below Jiangsu and Shandong provinces. Jiangsu's collective industry produced a total of 17 billion yuan in 1982 while Shandong produced 9.8 billion yuan.
