More than 840 wildfires sparked by an "unprecedented" lightning storm are burning in Northern California, alarming the governor and requiring the help of firefighters from Nevada and Oregon.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said he found it "quite shocking" how quickly the number of fires has risen in just one day.
At least 842 fires were burning on Monday, said Del Walters, assistant regional chief of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. That was up from 540 late Sunday. All but a couple were in the northern part of the state.
