It is said that a French missionary came to Bailu town in 1865. He was so touched by the good will and hospitality of the locals, as well as the town's charming landscape, that he felt his heart enlightened by the sanctity of God in this unexpected civil paradise. His visit inspired him to raise the funds necessary to build Bailu Academy. Construction of the catholic seminary was completed in 1908, when it was made open to the public. It consisted of a three-storied L-shaped building where monks lived and studied, and a Gothic-style lady chapel. The rear of the chapel was destroyed in a 1934 landslide.
