Chemical spill pollutes river

China Daily | Updated: 2008-06-10 08:01

NANNING, Guangxi: Chemical spilling out of an overturned truck is threatening to contaminate the source of drinking water of more than 200,000 people in Baise city, the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.

The truck, carrying 33.6 tons of crude phenol, overturned in the neighboring Funing county, Yunnan province, on Saturday morning, spilling the chemical into the Zhesang River.

Workers, on government orders, are busy building a barricade on the river to reduce the threat of pollutants. Also, they have thrown lime and active carbon in the river to neutralize and absorb crude phenol.
