Military chief appointed

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev yesterday replaced armed forces' chief of general staff General Yuri Baluyevsky, who media said had clashed with Russia's defense minister.

Medvedev announced the appointment in his place of General Nikolai Makarov, a First Deputy Defense Minister. He said Baluyevsky would move to be deputy head of the country's Security Council.
