Job losses stalk bag belt of Guangdong

By Zhan Lisheng | China Daily | Updated: 2008-06-03 07:25

GUANGZHOU: Middle-aged migrant Zhao Bing has been looking for a job in Guangzhou for the past month, but to no avail.

Almost illiterate, Zhao from Henan province, aims to be employed for a job that does not require much skill. He worked for a privately run plastic bag workshop in the suburban district of Baiyun in Guangzhou before his boss decided to close down the small plant a month ago.

"I wish to work for another plastic bag factory. The job can be very simple and does not entail much training," he told China Daily. "But very few plastic bag factories, if any, are recruiting new staff nowadays in the Pearl River Delta cities."
