Vizquel sets record for games at shortstop
MIAMI: San Francisco's Omar Vizquel set the Major League Baseball record for games played at shortstop Sunday when he played in both games of a doubleheader against the Florida Marlins.
Vizquel took his games played total to 2,584, passing fellow Venezuelan and Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio.
Aparicio had played in the majors from 1956-73 with the Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox.
An 11-time Gold Glove winner, Vizquel is a career .274 hitter over 20 seasons spent with the Seattle Mariners, Cleveland Indians and Giants.
He last won the Gold Glove in 2006 with San Francisco.
Vizquel was honored by Marlins fans while his teammates stayed in the dugout after the fifth inning of the second game - once the game became official.
"I was a little surprised that they were off the field because I wasn't quite sure what was going to happen," Vizquel said.
Vizquel had been remarkably durable over his career, playing in at least 136 games in 16 of his seasons.
