Nationwide strike planned

Greece's largest union grouping has called for a nationwide strike yesterday to protest against government privatization plans, with transport, ports, hospitals and banks likely to be worst hit.

The ruling conservatives hope to sell off stakes in several state-run companies, including the main commercial ports and Greece's largest phone company OTE, with proceeds earmarked to pay down public debt.
