Cities see evacuations, disruptions in transport

The powerful earthquake in Sichuan province yesterday afternoon sent tremors throughout the country, forcing evacuations from buildings and disrupting transport.

A tremor measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale hit Beijing at 2:35 pm, shaking buildings and sending panicking people onto the streets, local media reported.

Office workers were seen moving out of towers in the capital's financial district.
