- At least 94 people are killed and more than 200 are injured when a quake measuring 6.8 hits the sparsely populated Jiashi county of Xinjiang.Feb 1996 - 304 people are killed and 16,000 are injured in the mountain town of Lijiang, Yunnan province, following a quake measuring 7.0.
Nov 1988 - 730 people are killed and 400,000 homes are destroyed in remote areas of Yunnan following a quake measuring 7.6.
