Envoy gets death threat

Security has been stepped up at Australia's diplomatic mission in Fiji after its high commissioner received a death threat, local police said.

Australia has been a vocal critic of Fiji's military government, which staged a bloodless coup in 2006, urging military leader Frank Bainimarama to stage democratic elections in 2009.

Fiji police said the death threat to Australian High Commissioner James Batley came via a letter delivered by taxi.
