China to expand higher education

China will speed up expansion of high education in the coming five years, the Ministry of Education and the State Planning Commission said.

The number of college students will increase at an average annual rate of 121,000 and will reach 1.76 million by 1987, compared with 1.153 million in 1982.

Sijiqing People's Commune, one of the most developed in Beijing suburbs, is gathering a bumper harvest of vegetables.

China's regular colleges will gradually increase annual enrollment to 550,000 in 1987, a 75 percent increase over the 1982 figure of 315,000.

Joint venture gains profits

China's first joint venture enterprise - the Beijing Air Catering Co Ltd, which opened three years ago has seen a tenfold growth in its business turnover.

In 1979, the catering service at the Capital Airport served only 640 passengers a day on an average on board 13 airlines.

After the company became a joint venture with China Air Catering Co Ltd of Hong Kong, it served 15 airlines and 2,761 passengers a day in 1982.
