Chirac has operation

Former French President Jacques Chirac has undergone a successful operation to fit a pacemaker and is expected to return home at the weekend, his office said on Friday.

"The procedure, which was a mild one that had been scheduled for several days, went perfectly smoothly. President Jacques Chirac should return home by the end of the weekend," a spokeswoman said.
