Pause in withdrawal urged

The Iraq war commander told a Senate hearing yesterday that he recommends a 45-day "period of consolidation and evaluation" in July before deciding when to resume US troop reductions.

General David Petraeus described the security situation in Iraq as improved since he last testified before Congress last September, but he said it was still fragile and reversible.
