Rethinking pop culture

For years, veteran sculptor Ren Jun has been intrigued by people from all walks of life who like to have their pictures taken holding their fingers in a V-sign.

Ren believes the hand signals exemplify the penetration of popular Western culture, and the triumph of consumerism among the average Chinese.

In his first oil painting show in Beijing, Ren tries to convey these messages through a dozen seemingly casual depictions of Chinese people from different social backgrounds.

Born in 1961 in Shaanxi province, Ren first made a name as a sculptor whose gigantic works can be found in many Chinese cities.
