Britain's defense secretary will tell lawmakers today that British troops will remain in Iraq, contrary to previously announced plans, after violence erupted during an attempted crackdown on militia groups.
The defense ministry said Des Browne would tell the House of Commons that the scheduled withdrawal of around 1,500 British troops was being put on hold.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown said late last year the number of British forces would be reduced to 2,500 starting in the spring, if commanders approved the plan.
