UNDP report: Poverty in retreat

China Daily | Updated: 2008-03-26 07:16

Bangladesh takes due pride in being a world leader in poverty research and innovation.

During the past decade, it has not only managed to reduce poverty by more than 10 percent, but also produced two Nobel Laureates -Mohammad Yunus and Amartya Sen - who have changed the way we look at poverty and made outstanding contributions to addressing its root causes.

Poverty is not yet history, but it is certainly on the retreat in Bangladesh. The country has made substantial progress - bringing the level down from 58.8 percent in 1990 to 40 percent in 2005. The decline is significant and robust, regardless of the statistical methods employed.
