American aid worker still nervous to leave hotel

More than a week after the riots, Tony Gleason said he still needs to summon up his courage to go out on the streets in Lhasa.

The American poverty relief worker was left wary and alone after the March 14 unrest. His wife and daughter returned to the United States on Thursday, and for most of the time since, he has stayed in his hotel.

"Wherever there were mobs, people tried to get away from them," Gleason, a field director of the Tibet Poverty Alleviation Fund, a private American organization, which helps Tibetans in areas such as skill training, health and micro-finance, said.
