About 13,000 people in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region had to evacuate their homes on Wednesday night after sections of the main embankment of the Yellow River - China's second longest - collapsed, local authorities said yesterday.

The bank bursts occurred in the town of Duguitala, Hangjin Banner in Ordos city, 250 km from the capital Hohhot, Niu Shaoyun, deputy director of the local flood control headquarters, said.

A 450-m stretch burst on Wednesday afternoon, followed by a 30-m section collapse yesterday morning, Niu said.
