Gov't unfazed by poll blow

French government leaders ruled out any major policy shifts yesterday after heavy losses by the ruling center-right in local elections stepped up pressure on President Nicolas Sarkozy.

"Democracy would go crazy if we started to shake everything up nine months after the presidential election on the basis of a local election result," government spokesman Laurent Wauquiez told France Inter radio yesterday.
