Three Rivers and Three Lakes

It refers to the Huaihe, Haihe, and Liaohe rivers, and the Taihu, Chaohu, and Dianchi lakes. Located in the areas with the highest population density and industrial development, the three rivers and lakes are under special State watch regarding pollution control. A State project costing 123.4 billion yuan was launched in 2000 to enhance the treatment of pollutants, reduce emissions, and improve the water quality of the three rivers and lakes. But the project did not show the expected results by 2005.
