This year's winners
Launched in 1998 by L'Oreal and UNESCO, the program "For Women in Science" recognizes five laureates annually, one from each of the five continents, who have contributed to the advancement of science. The awards are conferred in the life sciences and material sciences, in alternating years. Each laureate receives $100,000.
This year's winners of the L'Oreal-UNESCO Awards for Women in Science are:
Lihadh Al-Gazali of United Arab Emirates, "for the characterization of new hereditary diseases".
V. Narry Kim of the Republic of Korea, "for elucidating several key steps in the formation of a new class of gene-regulating RNA molecules".
Ada Yonath of Israel, "for structural studies of the protein-synthesizing system and the mode of action of antibiotics".
Ana Belen of Argentina, "for her contribution to the understanding of the molecular basis of hearing".
Elizabeth Blackburn of the United States, "for the discovery of the nature and maintenance of chromosome ends and their roles in cancer and aging".
In 2004, L'Oreal China, China Commissions for UNESCO and China's All-Women Federation launched the China Fellowship "For Women in Science". Valued at 100,000 yuan ($14,000), in the first year, four women researchers were given awards. Subsequently, the fellowships have gone to five researchers every year.
