Rhythm & Blues singer David Tao's world tour performance is arriving in Beijing. Born in 1969, Tao released his first album titled after his name. In his second collection, I Am Ok, he defined himself with the R&B style, leading audiences back to the simple happiness of the rock 'n' roll times around the 1970s. His voice blends the flavors of rock, folk song, Latin balled and country music.

China Puppet Theater will offer a feast of puppet shows for the vacations. Magic Vat, Dancing Mouse, Little Ding Dang are some of the plays that will invite audience participation.

Chinese Acrobatics Group, established in 1950, has toured more than 80 countries, won numerous international awards and has helped foster friendships between China and other nations. Its performance includes traditional acrobatics, a circus show, magic, old Beijing folk plays and more. The show blends music, dance, local opera and martial arts.

Under the baton of Xu Zhong, the China Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra continues its seasonal concert with Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, Mozart's Piano Concerto No 27 in B Minor and Georges Bizet's Symphony No 1 in C Major.

The Macao Symphony Orchestra will perform in the capital under the baton of Shao En, who is also the artistic director of the orchestra. In the cards are a series of classic and romantic music pieces by Beethoven.

Conductor Lorin Maazel leads the New York Philharmonic Orchestra on its tour of China. A French-American musician born in 1930, Maazel has cooperated with over 150 symphony orchestras. The performance will include Mendelssohn's Symphony No 9, From the New World, Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No 3, Beethoven's Symphonies No 8 and 9.

Exhibitions

Some 50 young artists from the Sichuan Fine Art Institution will provide an overall view of the contemporary group. The show consists of two parts. Ink paintings, with the title The Exploration of Contemporary Chinese Painting, are created by Feng Bin and his post-graduated students. The oil paintings are executed by young teachers and students of the institute.

Iranian film director Abbas Kiarostami brings his collection of art works to Beijing. Having engaged in photography for more than 25 years, Kiarostami is also gifted at poetry and graphic design. This exhibition includes 84 black-and-white photographs, two video movies and a few poems. Kiarostami's award-winning films include The Wind Will Carry Us, Under the Olive Trees and Taste of Cherry.

To introduce ancient Vietnamese culture to Chinese people, the Vietnam National Museum brings 115 sets of bronze wares with the history dating back 2,500 years. Included are farm tools and various kinds of vessels.

Jiang Pengyi's two photograph series, All Back to Dust and Luminant, are both based on skyscrapers dotting the city skyline. Using long exposure time, the works in Luminant, present the power of the buildings over the modern city. In the series, All Back to Dust, the same buildings appear dilapidated.

The opening exhibition of the studio, entitled Search and Research, features the video and installation works and photographs by Finish artist Kristiina Koskentola, as well as paintings by American artist Keith Yurdana. Koskentola's works have been developed during her travels in Asia and her three months' stay in the Imagine Gallery as a resident artist. The works are about identity, origin and memory. Three large panels are the central focus of Yurdana's efforts this winter. They address issues of belief, myth and the natural world.

Sculptor Li Yuduan employs ceramics to create bright cadence and exaggerate images. Drawing inspiration from ordinary life, Li portrays familiar scenes with rich imagination. A young couple lie on bed chatting intimately with each other; a lovely girl sleeps in the stamen of a flower; fish swim in the middle of a plate, splashing water on its rim.

Renowned Chinese ink painter Wu Guanzhong is to hold a solo exhibition in Beijing.

Entitled Wu Guanzhong Goes to 798 Art Zone, the exhibition displays 80 ink and calligraphic works that the 89-year-old artist has created over the past two years, says curator Jia Fangzhou.

The English and French editions of Wu's painting album will be released during the show.

To greet the Spring Festival, the National Art Museum of China has prepared a feast of Chinese folk art. On show are about 270 sets of New Year pictures and kites selected from over 4,000 pieces collected by the museum over the past decades, from masters of folk art in over 10 provinces and regions. Also on display are about 60 festive paintings by master painters such as Li Keran, Jin Meisheng, Li Qun, Gu Yuan and Zhang Ding.

Ku Art Center is hosting a group show of contemporary art titled Authentic. On display are over 30 works of sculpture, installations, oil paintings, paperwork, photography and videos by nine young Chinese artists, including Gu Ying, Meng Botong and Liu Ren. The highly individualistic works resist categorization and the artists are different to the movement of artists born in the 1980s.
