Tomlinson set to face Pats

China Daily | Updated: 2008-01-16 07:23

SAN DIEGO, California: Injured San Diego Chargers rusher LaDainian Tomlinson said on Monday that he expects to play against hot favorites the New England Patriots on Sunday in a game to decide which team advances to Super Bowl XLII.

Tomlinson bruised his right knee in Sunday's 28-24 triumph at Indianapolis in a quarterfinal playoff game and an MRI exam on Monday found no major damage even though it is not certain when he will return to practice.

"I think they have me listed as questionable," Tomlinson said. "I'm pretty sure I'll be able to play."

Tomlinson, the 2006 NFL Most Valuable Player, was hurt when he was hit by the Colts' Marlin Jackson at the end of an eight-yard run early in the second quarter and said he does not know when he will be able to practice.

"I'm not sure yet. We'll get as much treatment as we can," Tomlinson said.

Tomlinson said his knee became stiff and even though he remained on the sideline in the second half he never returned to the game.

Entering as underdogs against a Patriots team only two triumphs shy of becoming the first unbeaten NFL champion since the 1972 Miami Dolphins, the Chargers also have an injured starting quarterback in Philip Rivers.

He was forced out on the last play of the third quarter, a 56-yard touchdown pass he threw to Darren Sproles. Rivers landed awkwardly and limped off the field favoring his left knee.

Chargers coach Norv Turner said Rivers will be analyzed each day before being allowed to return to practice.
