STAGE

The Spanish Ballet of Murcia was established in 1985. It is led by Carmen and her sibling Matilde Rubio and their credo is to protect and develop the Spanish music genre of flamenco. The Spanish Ballet of Murcia is the only dance troupe in Spain that blends flamenco and opera. Most of the operas presented by the dance troupe are derived from ancient Greek myths.

Eileen Chang's best-known novel Red Rose and White Rose has been adapted for the stage by director Tian Qinxin. White Rose will be played by Hu Jingfan while Golden Horse Award winner Qin Hailu will play Red Rose. Qin says she is trying to put a different spin on the way her character was portrayed in Stanley Kwan's film, which won Joan Chen a best actress award at the 1994 Golden Horse Awards.

CONCERT

Prestigious classical Chinese compositions such as The Yellow River Piano Concerto and the Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, will be presented at the 10th Anniversary of Music Salon Concert in Guangzhou. The music will be performed by the Zhong Shan Youth Philharmonic Orchestra. Yuliang Tu and Xucong Guan are the piano and violin performers.

Tickets are free for members of Music Salon.

As one of the most important surrealistic photographers of the 20th century, Jerry Uelsmann's achievements were made entirely in the darkroom. With sophisticated techniques, he created his surreal photographs in a series of steps - including using a projector, masking, shading, projecting and exposing different areas of the photosensitive paper.

Zhongshan City is the hometown of Sun Yat-sen (Sun Zhongshan in Mandarin), the harbinger of democratic revolution in modern China. In the art field many national and international artists have been produced here. The Centennial Zhongshan-Art Exhibition of Zhongshan is the largest and highest-level art exhibit ever held by Zhongshan, a city named after Sun Yat-sun in Guangdong Province.

Chinese artist Tian Wei moved to the United States in the mid 1980's and is rarely heard of in China these days. His new solo exhibition - with productions from his near-30-year sojourn abroad, and recent works - offers a visual experience that reveals the cross-cultural explorations of a Chinese artist. Tian's solo exhibition, Gene, is in Guangzhou.

Soul Involved in Europe by Xu Peiti, a Chinese photographer living in Japan, is different from his other exhibitions. Viewers can "see" his pictures from different angles and find unusual images.

Now he is showing his impressions of Europe to visitors in Guangzhou.
