2046 (2004)

A four-year project starring Asian A-listers including Tony Leung, Gong Li, Faye Wong, Zhang Ziyi and Takuya Kimura. Considered by some as a sequel to In the Mood for Love, the film follows a writer who lives in 2046, a time where he can revisit all of his old memories.

In the Mood for Love (Huayang Nianhua, 2000)

Tony Leung took home the Best Actor award from Cannes after his work here. But the film also benefits from Maggie Cheung's convincing performance and the exceptional art direction which recreates old Shanghai.

Happy Together (Chunguang Zhaxie, 1996)

A story about a gay Hong Kong couple living in Argentina. Tony Leung and the late Leslie Cheung play the two lovers.

Fallen Angels (Duoluo Tianshi, 1994)

The film follows a professional killer in Hong Kong who wants out of the business. There's also a sub-plot about a mute who breaks into restaurants, cafs and ice-cream trucks at night and forces people to buy his goods.

Ashes of Time (Dongxie Xidu, 1994)

There's no gravity-defying kungfu or gorgeous costumes, but the poetic monologues, and the remote desert setting form the basis of Wong's unique sword-fighting epic.

Chung King Express (Chongqing Senlin, 1994)

The story takes place in the building where Wong lived as a little boy. Wong's two heart broken cops encounter two mysterious women, one a killer and the other a fast-food salesperson.

Days of Being Wild (A Fei Zhengzhuan, 1991)

The late Leslie Chueng plays a handsome young man raised by a drunken ex-prostitute who is not his real mother. A Fei, the protagonist, sets out on a journey to the Philippines to find his real identity after two messy relationships.

As Tears Go By (Wangjiao Kamen, 1988)

Wong's debut feature stars Andy Lau and Maggie Cheung. This love story between a gangster and his cousin helped propelled Cheung into stardom.
