Book review: Executives shed light on winning in China

The interviews and profiles, put together with a selection of reports from China Daily, provide a glimpse into the world of multinationals operating in today's China.

Multinationals today need China as much as China needs them, if not more. The country is already among the top 10 markets for most MNCs, while many have drawn up a timetable and detailed plans to make sure that it is among their top five. An MNC's billing in the world market today depends on its performance in China.

But chasing Chinese consumers is a far more difficult exercise today. With more global companies converging on the Chinese market and domestic firms quickly picking up the tricks of the trade, MNCs are under constant pressure to localize and innovate in order to survive in the face of fierce competition.

The book's 30 CEO interviews also give insight into the new challenges confronting multinationals. There are increasing signs that policymakers are growing tired of China's "world's factory" tag and pushing the country to move up the value chain rather than produce the most basic of things, often causing grave threats to the country's resources and environment.
