Awaiting SOE profit deal

China Daily | Updated: 2007-12-20 07:24

The profits State-owned enterprises (SOEs) give to the government should be used to promote the public welfare, says an article in China Economic Times. The following is an excerpt:

As the Ministry of Finance said on Tuesday, the administrative measures on the collection of profits from SOEs require enterprises controlled by the central government to pay 5 to 10 percent of their profits to the government.

For many years, the question of how the huge profits made by SOEs should be used has been at the center of a heated public debate. The widely held hope is that they will soon be used for the public benefit.
