1982: Beat 2-1 by New Zealand in the playoff of the then Asian-Oceania Zone qualifier and narrowly missed entry into the World Cup finals.
1986: Finished second in the group competition and did not qualify into the final round.
1990: Made it into the final round but its two wins and three losses cost it a ticket into the World Cup finals.
1994: Eliminated from the group competition.
1998: Cruised into the final round but settled for third place as only the top two teams qualified.
2002: Won its first World Cup finals ticket after recording six wins, one draw and one loss in the final round.
2006: Eliminated from the group competition.
