Rules and regulations for legally binding a union of love
Foreigners must obtain certificate of marriageability from their embassy or consulate. You will need your passport, notarized copies of official divorce documents (if applicable), your partner's national ID card and hukou (resident permit).
A copy of the certificate of marriageability, translated into Chinese, must be provided when applying for marriage certificate from the Chinese government.
Certificate of marriage can only be issued from local government registry in the city or town where Chinese partner's hukou is held.
Couple must have formal photos taken together, and present three photos at the registry.
Applicants for marriage certificate are required to answer questions, fill out forms and swear under oath.
Each partner is issued a marriage certificate in red booklet with the couple's picture inside.
The registry process is quick and inexpensive, informal dress suitable.
Most couples celebrate their union with friends and family at a private wedding ceremony later.
Chinese women must be 20 years old to marry, or 22 years for men.
Chinese diplomats, security officials, and others whose work is considered crucial to the State may not be legally eligible to marry foreigners.
