Man earns praise for cleaning dog droppings

A man in his late 60s has earned a good reputation for picking up dog-droppings in his residential area in Shenyang, Liaoning, over the past 10 years.

As he takes his dog for its morning walk around the area, he cleans away droppings and advises other dog owners he meets to do the same. When he started, many residents whispered about him because some thought he meddled too much in things that weren't his business.

But now many dog owners, inspired by his efforts, have joined hands with him to clean away the mess because, they said, "he has set a good example to us all".

A car-free wedding procession in city

A newly married couple from Shenyang, Liaoning, walked for half an hour to their wedding ceremony venue on Sunday, along with their relatives and friends to show their support for China's first "vehicle-free day".

Onlookers applauded as they watched the couple walk through the streets. "What they did deserves respect from us all," one onlooker said.

Over the weekend, "vehicle-free day," the first event of its kind to be launched throughout the country, was observed by millions of people in 108 large cities across China, as many left their private cars at home.

Man wins lawsuit over blocking sunshine

A resident living in Shenyang, Liaoning, sued a land developer for 30,000 yuan ($3,993) in compensation after his house was kept out of the sunlight by a new building the developer had built in 2003.

Since then, the man, surnamed Hao, has had to switch all the lights on at his home, even in the daytime, because the building blocks out almost all the sunshine.

With the help of a local court, a professional appraiser proved that fact to be correct. Last Saturday, the court ruled that the developer must compensate him 23,000 yuan for infringing upon his easement of light.
