'Gorges' investment

China's Three Gorges Dam area will receive 26.9 billion yuan between 2007 and 2020 to develop tourism, which will also help create job opportunities for people relocated for the project.

The funds, financed by government allocations and business investments, will be used to upgrade tourist ferries along the valley, build roads and docks, improve tourist facilities and infrastructure, and preserve historic sites.

The investment will help the government achieve its goal of building tourism into a key industry in the region. By 2020, revenue is projected to reach 20 billion yuan annually, or 24.7 percent of the area's GDP.
