Two jailed for knife attack on former striker
A provincial court has dealt jail terms to two men involved in a knife attack on former China striker Chen Yongqiang, local media reported yesterday.
The Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court sentenced Wang Weijian and Cao Wei to seven and five years' jail respectively for attacking the soccer player in a restaurant in the southern city of Shenzhen in 2005.
The attack, which left Chen with knife wounds to his head, back and left arm, took place after a scuffle between the player and Cao outside the restaurant earlier that night, the paper said, citing court documents.
Chen, 28, currently a midfielder with Super League club Shenzhen Shangqingyin, is the latest Chinese player to be involved in violent attacks in recent years.
In October last year, Dalian Shide midfielder Quan Lei suffered a near-fatal knife attack after Chen's former teammate Lu Bofei was stabbed several times by a group of men the month before.

China defeats Chinese Taipei in Asian c'ships
JAKARTA: China managed an easy 3-1 win against Chinese Taipei in its first match at the 2007 Asian men's volleyball championship on Monday.
Yu Dawei scored 15 points and made five blocks to lead China to the 25-15, 20-25, 25-18 and 25-21 win against the Chinese Taipei team.
Shen Qiong had 14 points and Fang Yingchao 12.
Wang Ming-Chun leads the Chinese Taipei team with 19 points and Hung Jung-Chung has 13.
"The players were a little nervous on the court," said Zhou Jian'an, head coach of China. "They made too many mistakes during the game."
"But I am satisfied with the overall performance of the team," added Zhou.
Hung Jung-Chung, captain of Chinese Taipei, said that they were not so sad about the result against China.
"We played fairly well today, but our opponents are too tall for us. They totally blocked our counter-attacks," Hung said.
