A crucial step forward

Yesterday's meeting between Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan and his Japanese counterpart Masahiko Komura was a landmark in the recent history of China-Japan relations.

It had been more than nine years since the last visit to Japan by a Chinese defense minister. The most recent meeting between the two countries' defense chiefs took place four years ago.

During the intervening drought of communication, both countries underwent many changes.
