Leicester player Clarke 'comfortable' after collapse
LONDON: Leicester City defender Clive Clarke spent a comfortable night in hospital after suffering what doctors suspect was a cardiac arrest at halftime of the team's League Cup match at Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.
A spokesman at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham said he was in a "comfortable condition" while Leicester boss Martin Allen paid tribute to the club's medical staff for their quick treatment of the 27-year-old.
The Irish international, who joined Leicester on loan from Sunderland two weeks ago, suffered the cardiac arrest on the day Sevilla's Spanish international midfielder Antonio Puerta died in hospital after collapsing following a heart attack on Saturday.
Tuesday's second round match was abandoned with the home side leading 1-0 and will be replayed at a later date.
"Our medics were outstanding," Allen told reporters. "Clive is sitting up exhausted, but very grateful to them."
Officials from both sides issued an apology to fans for the postponement of the match with Leicester's chief executive Tim Davies explaining: "We want to apologise to the fans but I am sure they understand sometimes serious injuries are more important."
City said "club officials from both sides agreed that the best course of action was to postpone the encounter."
Davies was also quoted on Forest's Web site (www.nottinghamforest.com) as telling reporters: "When Clive went into the dressing room at half-time, he just collapsed and was very seriously ill.
"Everyone was very shaken up and distressed as I'm sure you can imagine and (City manager) Martin Allen is trying to contact his family at the moment.
"We're not aware of any problems Clive had with Sunderland before he joined us but his medical records are a private matter."
