Zhang Xinsheng re-elected as FISU vice president

BANGKOK: China's Vice Minister of Education Zhang Xinsheng was re-elected as vice president of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) on Sunday at FISU's 30th General Assembly.

Zhang, 59, was first elected in 2003 during the Summer Universiade in Daegu, South Korea.

Zhang, also the president of the Asian University Sports Federation, said: "Besides the routine work as vice president of FISU, I will do my best in the second tenure to help Harbin (in north China) and Shenzhen (in south China) hold the best-ever (winter and summer) Universiade in 2009 and 2011 respectively."

American George Killian, 88, was re-appointed FISU President.

Beijing to host grassroots tennis festival

Hundreds of tennis lovers are tightening their strings for the 2007 Beijing International Tennis Festival, a grassroots sporting initiative, at Beijing's Chaoyang Park, on Saturday.

Chinese-American and French Open winner Michael Chang will be guest star at the festival, which includes five tournaments: the International Junior Elite Challenge, the Tennis Club Challenge, the International Tennis Friendship Tournament, the Beijing Community Open and the Beijing International Veteran Tournament.

The event was jointly organized by the Beijing Sports Bureau, Beijing Tennis Association, Beijing Veteran Tennis Association, Beijing Association for Promoting International Exchanges and Beijing Sports Federation.

Tai'an hosts national great outdoor quest

The Taishan Wushu Cup 2007 national mountain outdoor quest will be held in Tai'an, Shandong Province, from November 9-11.

About 20 top club and college teams will run, mountain bike and climb, raft, paddle and in-line skate across a grueling 180km course during the three-day event.

Taking in the Taishan, Culai and Lianhua mountains as well as the Dongping and Tianping lakes, the quest is being organized by the China Mountaineering Association, the Tai'an Municipal People's Government and the Taishan Wushu Academy.

The elite national tournament will be held during the 21st Taishan International Mountain Climbing Festival and help promote China's national fitness program.
