Standards spread, so does algae

China Daily | Updated: 2007-07-04 07:02

In 1985, China issued its first standard for drinking water. In 2005, the Ministry of Construction supplemented this standard with another one for water supplies in cities.

The old standard only listed 35 indicators of water testing. Most of the indicators were concerning non-organic contaminators. But a few organic contaminators and pesticides or micro-organisms including algae toxins were in the indicators.

The latest standard, which takes effect from July 1, adds another 71 indicators for water quality, including that for microcystins.
