Pippi Longstocking
Pipi - the lovely little girl of Swedish children's author Astrid Lingren's famous work Pipi Longstocking - stole the hearts of Beijing audiences during the centennial celebration of Lindgren's birth on June 22.
Lindgren wrote 87 stories for children - all of which were translated worldwide. The most famous was Pippi Longstocking, which has been printed in more than 60 languages.
After she passed away in 2002, the Swedish government established the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award to honor her contributions to children's literature.
A musical adapted from Pippi Longstocking will be presented at the China Children's Art Theater on July 21, with Chinese actress Tang Yan (pictured) performing in the lead role. Swedish director Staffan Gotestam had adapted many other works by Lindgren into theatrical stage shows. He also acted as the elder of the two brothers in the film The Brothers Lionheart, which was adapted from Lindgren's homonymous work.
China Children Press and Publication Group (CCPPG) officially holds the copyrights for eight of Lindgren's titles in Chinese, including Pippi.

The Olympic scroll call
The China Calligraphy and Painting News from Tianjin and the Overseas Chinese Artists Association from Los Angeles are soliciting works from Chinese painters for a forth coming international exhibition in the lead up to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
Winning entries will be joined to form a 29-meter-long scroll for the exhibition, which is scheduled to kick off in June 2008 in Los Angeles before touring 20 other Olympic cities, organizers say.
Chinese ink painters are invited to express their wishes and hopes for the sports mega-meeting in Beijing and their impressions upon their Olympic cities they live in with their painting brushes.

Auction
Charity works
Sotheby's (Hong Kong) plans to auction off a private collection of reunification art to mark the 10th Anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland on Friday at The Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong.
Artists Lu Zhang, Chen Guoli, Zhang Zhiqiang and Lu Ho captured the historic moment of reunification in their collaborative oil-on-canvas painting Celebration of the Century (pictured).
This is one of the 30 rare and outstanding Chinese artworks to be auctioned, with proceeds going to the Chinese Red Cross Foundation, Sotheby's Asia CEO Kevin Ching said.
Documenting Hong Kong's different dimensions and capturing its significant historical moments, the works under the hammer are expected to rake in a total of HK$20 million ($2.56 million). Both Sotheby's Hong Kong and the collection's owner would donate a portion of the net proceeds to the Chinese Red Cross Foundation, according to organizers.
The collection was first exhibited at the Chinese Revolution Museum - now part of the National Museum of China - in Beijing on June 30, 1997.
