Schumacher could take on Hamilton at Wembley

LONDON: Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton could go head to head in a charity 'Race of Champions' at London's Wembley Stadium in December, event organizers said on Wednesday.

Retired seven times Formula One champion Schumacher has confirmed his participation while organizers said Hamilton, the 22-year-old British rookie leading the standings for McLaren, had expressed an interest.

"It could be a unique occasion, the only occasion to see him compete against Michael Schumacher," said Fredrik Johnsson, founder of the event which brings together champions and leading drivers from across the world of motorsport.

The Race of Champions, previously held at the Stade de France in Paris, will have a rally-style format with knockout heats on a two-lane asphalt track inside the new Wembley Stadium.

Gay targets 100 meters world record at US meet

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana: American sprinter Tyson Gay said on Wednesday could break the 100 meters world record at the US championships if conditions are favorable.

"If the weather is nice, nice enough to give me maybe a 1.5 (meters per second tailwind), I think it is very possible I can break the world record," Gay said at a news conference.

"You try not to think about it," the 24-year-old added, "but I think it is a possibility because I have been practising good, running some fast times in practice and I am healthy."

The championships, which serve as the American trials for August's world championships in Osaka, Japan, began yesterday. The 100 meters finals are scheduled for today.

"I believe I can run 9.73 (seconds) or faster," said Gay, who also hopes to make the US team in the 200 later this week.

Warriors' Stephen Jackson enters plea in Indiana case

CHICAGO The Golden State Warriors' Stephen Jackson pleaded guilty to charges stemming from firing a gun during a fight in Indiana last year under an agreement that will spare him jail time, officials said on Wednesday.

The Marion County Prosecutor's Office in Indianapolis said Jackson, a former Indiana Pacer, pleaded guilty to a single count of criminal recklessness.

Under the agreement he will pay a $5,000 fine and serve 100 hours of community service.

Police charged Jackson following a fight outside an Indianapolis club last October during which, they said, he fired a gun into the air.

Dortmund complete Kovac signing from Juventus

BERLIN: Croatia defender Robert Kovac has signed for Borussia Dortmund from Juventus on a free transfer.

Kovac, who played for Bayern Munich for four years before joining Juventus in 2005, opted for a return to the Bundesliga on a two-year contract after a proposed move to Dinamo Zagreb fell through.

"From a competitive point of view, the task in Dortmund is much more attractive," the 33-year-old Kovac said in a statement released by the German club.

Kovac should fill the gap left by Christoph Metzelder, who is set to join Real Madrid on a free transfer.
