Basketball

China launches school hoops program

The China School Campus Health Action, Basketball Party was officially launched yesterday at Beijing Yucai Middle School.

The event, organized by the Ministry of Education, State General Administration of Sports, China's Caring Committee for the Next Generation and the Chinese Basketball Association, will last four months.

Sponsored by China Mobile, students from 400 schools in 20 Chinese cities - Beijing, Shanghai, Hefei, Nanjing, Shijiazhuang, Shenyang, Changchun, Xining, Urumqi, Xiamen, Haikou, Zhengzhou, Luoyang, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Jinhua, Dongguan, Kunming, Chengdu and Changsha - will undergo a series of tests of their basketball skills.

The first phase is elimination by individual participating schools, the second city elimination and the third a national finals in Shenyang with the top three finishers being awarded prizes.

Dalian int'l marathon guns off on Sunday

The 21st Dalian International Marathon will be held on Sunday in Dalian, a coastal city in Northeast China's Liaoning Province.

More than 400 overseas marathoners from 33 countries and regions will take part in the event, said Sun Xinshengdeputy director of Dalian Sports Bureau, at a news briefing in Beijing yesterday.

To prevent the participants from suffering sunstroke during the race, the organizing committee will provide quick and sufficient medical aid for all athletes, Sun said.

Sports Recreation Expo to be held in Shanghai

China Sports Recreation and Travelling Exhibition will be held in Shanghai Exhibition Center from August 8 to 12.

Organized by the State General Administration of Sports and Shanghai Municipal Government, the expo has attracted over 40 participants from around the world.

As the country's first expo which focuses on the market of sports travel, the exhibition features the Beijing Olympics show and a number of Chinese traditional sports competitions. Other highlights include a yachting festival, and sports souvenir and cartoon shows.
