Daly, Elkington in the hunt for late entry to US Open

LOS ANGELES: Former major winners John Daly and Steve Elkington enter the last-chance saloon on Monday bidding to secure places at this month's US Open.

American Daly and Australian Elkington are among 117 players who will be competing in a 36-hole qualifier at Colonial Country Club in Memphis, Tennessee for 15 spots at the second major championship of the year.

Seventy-two players are already exempt for the June 14-17 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club and the remaining 83 berths will be decided on Monday in sectional qualifying at 13 venues.

Big-hitting Daly, winner of the 1991 PGA Championship and the 1995 British Open at St. Andrews, is one of the biggest drawcards in the game despite losing his exempt status on the PGA Tour.

MIAMI: Billy Donovan is having second thoughts about accepting the Orlando Magic head coaching job and hopes to return to the University of Florida, the Orlando Sentinel reported on its website on Sunday.

Just days after joining the NBA team, Donovan has approached both the Magic and Florida officials in an attempt to void his five-year, $27.5 million contract so that he could return to the university, the newspaper reported.

Donovan, who guided Florida to back-to-back NCAA championships, was hired as Magic coach on Thursday and introduced to the media on Friday.

Neither Magic nor Florida officials would comment, the Sentinel said.

CHICAGO: Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella has been suspended for "aggressive and inappropriate actions" in Saturday's game during which he allegedly kicked third-base umpire Mark Wegner.

In a statement on their website on Sunday the Cubs said the length of the suspension would be determined after Piniella met Major League Baseball officials on Monday.

Piniella did not manage the Cubs in Sunday's 10-1 win over the Atlanta Braves which broke Chicago's six-game losing streak.

South Korea's Seol issues Reading warning

TOKYO: South Korea midfielder Seol Ki-hyeon has told Reading boss Steve Coppell he will consider leaving the club unless he becomes a first-team regular.

"I am still thinking about my future. I definitely want to play more games next season," Seol told the official website of the Asian Cup.

"If I am not in the team next season, I will definitely have to find out whether another team wants a player like me."

Seol made 27 appearances for Reading last season but has spoken to Coppell about his concerns and desire for more regular first-team football with the English Premier League side.

"I have spoken with the manager and he knows I am thinking that and he said he doesn't like players who are happy to be out of the team."
