Lin Dan to lead China squad at Sudirman Cup

World No 1s Lin Dan and Zhang Ning will lead a full-strength China squad at next month's Sudirman Cup mixed team tournament in Scotland, the Chinese Badminton Association (CBA) said.

The defending champions and top seeds will meet fourth seeds Malaysia, England and Thailand in the group stage.

The tournament will be held at the Scotstoun International Sports Arena in Glasgow from June 11-17.

Men's singles: Lin Dan, Bao Chunlai, Chen Jin

Women's singles: Zhang Ning, Xie Xingfang, Zhu Lin

Men's doubles: Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng, Guo Zhendong/Xie Zhongbo

Women's doubles: Gao Ling/Zhang Jiewen, Yang Wei/Zhao Tingting, Zhang Yawen/Wei Yili

Mixed doubles: Xie Zhongbo/Zhang Yawen, Zheng Bo/Gao Ling

Scientific Congress sets up organizing committee

The organizing committee and science commission of the 2008 International Convention on Science, Education and Medicine in Sport (ICSEMIS) were officially launched yesterday in Guangzhou, capital city of South China's Guangdong Province.

With a theme of "sport sciences and harmonious society in the 21st century," the ICSEMIS will be held on August 1-5 next year in Guangzhou, several days just before the opening of the Beijing 2008 Olympics.

According to Detlef Dumon, an official from the IOC (International Olympics Council), the event , which will be attended by up to 2,000 Chinese and international scientists, will cover all major areas of sports science, education and medicine.

Environmental program concluds in Beijing

The ASUS Qomolongma Volunteering Program, an environmental protection event in Tibet, concluded in Beijing last month.

The 11-day climbing event aims to promote the awareness of environmental protection in Tibet ahead of the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

The volunteers visited a number of cities in Tibet and clean garbage along Tuotuo River, the headstream of the Yangtze River, with the highest altitute reaching 6,200 meters.

"This is a successful programme," said Li Zhixin, director of China Mountaineering Administrative Center. "It's also an unique way to spread our Olympic spirit in such a high altitute, and I am happy to see people's environmental awareness is improving day by day."
