Solskjaer enjoying place in Man United revival
MANCHESTER, England: Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is revelling in the new lease of life that has allowed him to play his part in the latest chapter of success at Old Trafford.
Solskjaer occupied a key role in United's treble triumph of 1999 and their domination of English domestic football at the start of the decade.
But the 34-year-old feared that a career-threatening knee injury would prevent him joining the new wave of talent that has re-established Alex Ferguson's side as the best in the country this season.
"Just to be part of this interesting, exciting team is special for me because honestly if I was true to myself I did not believe I could be a part of this and play with (Cristiano) Ronaldo and (Wayne) Rooney," Solksjaer told reporters.
"But I am here now and I'm working with them and it's fantastic.
"I looked in one of my diaries and I'm not too far away from my ambition that I wrote down a year ago, so I'm very pleased."
Solskjaer made only five appearances last season and did not play at all the season before as he battled back from serious knee problems.
However, manager Alex Ferguson kept faith in a player he regards as one of his best signings and Solskjaer's own determination to regain full fitness has been rewarded this season with 11 goals in 31 appearances.
"To be part of this team has been such a big part of my life and I will always treasure this as the best time in my life," said the Norwegian international.
"It's a great team to be a part of and I'm privileged and very proud to be here."
Solskjaer has already added a sixth championship medal to his collection this season and will further banish memories of his long battle against injury if he can complete a hat-trick of FA Cup final victories when United face Chelsea on Saturday.
"Every game is special for me and to be part of the first cup final at (the new) Wembley is special," he added.
"Obviously we are disappointed that we didn't get to the Champions League final but this makes up for it because it's such a big game for us.
"To end the season on a high and win the first cup final here would be a great achievement for the club and the team."
