Record profit
Deutsche Bank became the latest bank to benefit from strong markets yesterday when it reported that trading helped it reach a record profit in the first three months of the year.
Germany's biggest listed bank said its net profit rose by almost a third to more than 2.1 billion euros thanks primarily to a bumper trading result.
Costly treatment
US hospitals are charging uninsured patients about two-and-a-half times more than those with health insurance, according to a study released yesterday.
In 2004, the most recent year for which data was available, hospital patients without health insurance were charged an average 2.57 times more than those with health insurance, according to the study published in the latest issue of Health Affairs.
Bayer boost
Sales of Bayer's top drugs rose in the first quarter, driven in part of by its cancer drug, the German drugs and chemicals company said.
Bayer announced its quarterly results yesterday after it reported forecast-beating numbers last month, with earnings before interest, taxes and special items rising 17 percent to 1.4 billion euros. Sales of its multiple-sclerosis drug Betaseron rose 5.2 percent to 244 million euros in the first quarter.
Separate listing
San Miguel Corp said yesterday its domestic brewing operations would be spun off and listed separately on the Philippine Stock Exchange.
The company board authorized the listing of the unit, San Miguel Beer Domestic, along with that of San Miguel's domestic and regional packaging subsidiary, it said in a statement.
