Guqin festival
Changshu in East China's Jiangsu Province was once called Qinchuan Brooks of Qin, because there were seven steams running across the town, just like the seven strings of guqin, the pluck-stringed instrument, which was listed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage by UNESCO in 2003.
To promote the culture of guqin, the First China Guqin Festival finished in Changshu yesterday. It attracted players and musical lovers from both home and abroad. The festival also commemorated Wu Jinglue (1907-87), a great master player born in Changshu.
Artists including Li Xiangting of the Central Conservatory of Music played classic repertoires and pieces re-arranged by Wu. They also discussed protection and promotion of the culture of guqin. Ancient guqin, paintings and calligraphy works related to the instrument were displayed. Some artists went to local colleges to give lectures on the music tradition.
