Shennongjia: a land of natural wonders

Shennongjia: a land of natural wondersShennongjia, which maintains the best-reserved subtropical forest ecological system among areas located on the same latitude worldwide, has developed into a popular tourist destination due to its verdant forests, diverse species and countless natural mysteries.

Since being listed as a national geopark in 2005, Shennongjia's scientific value has proved to be an added attraction for tourists, in addition to its natural wonders.

Located in Central China's Hubei Province, Shennongjia covers an area of 3,253 square kilometers and has a population of 79,000.

There are six mountains standing 3,000 meters above sea level in the Shennongjia area, most composed of intrusive diabase rocks.

The 3,105.4-meters Shennongding Peak is the highest mountain in the Shennongjia area and known as the "Roof of Central China."

Tourists to the mountains will find themselves surrounded by blossoming flowers and thriving trees. They can experience and enjoy the beauty of four distinct seasons at different altitudes on their way to the top of the mountain.

Diverse flora and fauna

Situated in the heart of the country, Shennongjia is home to a wide range of plants and animals.

There are more than 3,700 species of plants in this ecological system and 40 are listed among key national preserved species.

Legend has it that Shen Nong, a legendary tribal head living more than 3,000 years ago, ventured into the mountain to collect herbs to relieve his people from illness and pains. The region is therefore named after him.

Shennongjia is also home to at least 1,050 species of animals. Seventy of them, including the snub-nosed monkey, are on the national protection list.

Natural mysteries, like albinism in animals like the white bear, prompt scientists to make frequent trips there.

Local authorities have attached great importance to striking a balance between preservation and reasonable use of the rich natural resources.

At present, the tourism area accounts for a mere 2.74 percent of the total natural area under preservation.
