Asian cinema shines bright in beach festival spotlight
The 8th Annual Newport Beach Film Festival's Asian Spotlight Event offers an exciting line-up of Asian film screenings at the Edwards Cinema in Fashion Island, Newport Beach. The event will showcase Tazza: The High Rollers (Korea), Always Sunset on Third Street (Japan) and Exiled (China).
Launched in 1999, the Newport Beach Film Festival is now one of the leading film festivals in the United States. Boasting more than 350 films from 40 countries, the festival has featured many acclaimed films, including the US premiere of 2006 Academy Award Best Picture Crash and the West Coast premieres of Dust to Glory, Spellbound, and Dogtown and Z Boys.
With its pristine coastal location and warm weather, strong network of corporate sponsors, nightly events, music performances and industry seminars, the Newport Beach Film Festival has quickly gained recognition among filmmakers and audiences worldwide.
Snapshots of the chic and famous on show
This year marks the 140th anniversary of Harper's Bazaar, one of the oldest fashion magazines in the world. Bazaar China, which began publishing in 1986, will hold a photographic exhibition to tell the stories behind the magazine and demonstrate changing fashion trends over the last 140 years recorded.
From May 10 to June 3, shoppers will see photos of the world's supermodels, designers, stylists and celebrities featured in Harper's Bazaar's 140-year history on display at Beijing's trendiest malls such as the Oriental Plaza, World Trade Center, SOGO, Pacific and Grand Pacific.
After Beijing, the exhibition will tour Shenyang, Xi'an, Chengdu, Hangzhou and Shanghai till October.
Local filmmakers have a shot at hot doco prize
The 3rd Aljazeera International Documentary Film Festival, sponsored by Aljazeera Satellite Network, kicked off yesterday and will run for four days in Doha, Qatar.
China's central and local TV stations sent 14 films to compete with about 80 other countries. Also taking part in the competition are eight independent films
Chen Changfeng, vice-president of the School of Journalism and Communication of Peking University, will be part of the jury.
Landlord Mr Jiang, a documentary produced by Shanghai-based Dragon TV, won the Bronze Trophy in last year's Non-Arabic Documentary section. It was the only Chinese award-winning picture that year.
There will be an exhibition fair during the festival where TV channels, producers and distributors from different countries will promote their products.
From June 3 to 10 in 2006, Aljazeera Satellite Network launched a series of reports on China, covering the country's politics, culture, education and sports. Two documentaries about China's ancient inventions and legendary navigator Zheng He's expedition in the early 15th century were also broadcast.
