'Nail house' episode a fight against plunder

By Zhou Ze | China Daily | Updated: 2007-04-12 07:11

With the demolition of the "nail house" in Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality last Monday, the three-year dispute between a local couple and a real estate developer over compensation came to an end.

Yang Wu and Wu Ping, the owners of the two-story brick building, left their house after reaching an agreement with the developer through six rounds of mediation by the local court. The case aroused wide attention within China and abroad. It continues to offer food for thought.

Chongqing Mayor Wang Hongju said on March 26 that the renewal of the old city was in the public interest. He made the point that the area's residents wanted to improve their living and transport conditions. Therefore, residents in this district where the "nail house" was agreed with the need for relocation.
