Blending innovation and humanity in corporate culture

Competition between companies is fundamentally determined by their corporate cultures, said Chen Xuefeng, president of Yongcheng Coal and Electricity Group Co Ltd.

"Though advanced machinery and facilities are important for development, corporate culture plays a pivotal role in sharpening the competitive edge of a company," Chen said.

Chen stressed that in his company, workers' interests are identical to corporate value.

The people-oriented philosophy penetrates into every solid link in the production procedure, as evidenced by the attitude towards safety in production.

Miners' security is given priority in the coal company's management.

Chen lost his mother in early childhood. The bitter personal experience gives him a strong understanding of what family means.

"Death or injury of a miner would be a terrible disaster for his family," Chen said. "If we cannot guarantee his safety, we are committing a crime against his family."

With such a belief, Chen and his team have strengthened management for production safety, and set a record of zero deaths in mining for more than three years.

As a rapidly growing company, Yongcheng Coal and Electricity Group has maintained an fresh attitude as if always starting up a new career, Chen said, adding that this is the defining character of the group company.

Driven by such an attitude, the company has been exploring various new fields in recent years, substantially contributing to its growth.

An innovative spirit is another essential part of the corporate value of the coal company.

They have created a new way to measure raw coal, which promotes efficient mining and makes rational use of natural resources.

In tune with the phrase "Think ahead", which Chen often mentions to his staff, the company began to seek fine coal resources across the country a couple of years ago.

At present, the company controls more than 10 billion tons of coal reserves in China alone.

Considering the limited supply of natural resources, the coal company has extended its business to other fields, such as rubber, aluminum and machinery manufacturing.

Aided by far-reaching vision, an open mind and prudent judgment, Chen and his team have made substantial progress in these new frontiers.

"Our goal is to build up a longstanding career," Chen said. "With the growth of the company, we feel ourselves stronger and complete."
